2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup
The 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be the 17th edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup, the tournament previously known as the FIBA World Championship. The first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup takes place in in Spain and it will be the last time the tournament will be held on the current four-year cycle. The next FIBA World Cup will be held five years later, in 2019, to reset the cycle on a different year than the FIFA World Cup.
There will be 24 teams taking part in the 2014 World Cup of Basketball and the winner will automatically qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Spain is among the favourite national teams and candidate to gold medal as well as USA team. Players such as Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, James Harden, Tony Parker, Paul Gasol, Calderón or Ricky Rubio will make the show go on!
The Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid (Barclaycard Arena as of September 1) will be the main venue, hosting the final and half of the matches in the final round. While no arenas from the 1986 FIBA World Championship will be reused, the current Madrid arena was built on the site of the original venue that was destroyed by fire in 2001, which was a venue used in 1986.
