El Greco and Modern Painting at the Prado
El Greco and Modern Painting at the Prado
Devised as one of the two main commemorative activities of the 4th Centenary of the death of El Greco, this exhibition sets out to show the importance of the rediscovery of the Cretan painter in the development of nineteenth- and twentieth-century painting.
The exhibition?s argument is structured into eight sections which examine the complex and extraordinarily rich links between El Greco and some of the founders of modern art such as Manet and Cézanne, Sorolla and Zuloaga, as well as artists belonging to nearly all the movements in twentieth-century painting ? Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism, New Figuration, etc. ? such as Picasso, Kokoschka, Beckmann, Chagall, Masson, Dalí, Orozco and Pollock.
Approximately 80% of the works lent for this exhibition come from the best known international museums and will be displayed alongside the selection of works by El Greco belonging to the Museo del Prado itself and other Spanish institutions.
